Here is a summary of effects of musical instruments.

Distance below means the sum of the squares of the horizontal and vertical offsets.

Magic flute
  • If confused or has no charges, behaves as a wooden flute.
  • "You produce soft music."
  • Monsters within a distance of 5 * explevel have to resist or fall asleep for 10d10 turns.
  • Exercises dexterity.
Wooden flute
  • If confused or a random number in the range 0 to dexterity + explevel - 1 is 25 or less,
    • then
      "The <flute> toots."
    • Otherwise
      "The <flute> trills."
      All snakes within a distance of 3 * explevel become peaceful.
  • Exercises dexterity.
Frost/Fire horn
  • If confused or has no charges, behave as a tooled horn.
  • Behaves as a wand of cold/fire except that the damage will be nd6 (where n is 6 to 11) instead of 6d6.
Tooled horn
  • "You produce a frightful, grave sound."
  • All monsters within a distance of 30 * explevel are awakened and no longer immobile.
  • Monsters within a distance of 10 * explevel have to resist or beginning to flee.
  • Abuses wisdom.
Bugle
  • "You extract a loud noise from the bugle."
  • All soldiers and guards on the level are no longer peaceful, asleep or immobile.
  • Abuses wisdom.
Magic harp
  • If confused or has no charges, behaves as wooden harp.
  • "The <harp> produces very attractive music."
  • Monsters within a distance of floor((explevel - 1) / 3) + 1 have to resist or become tame.
  • Exercises dexterity.
Wooden harp
  • If confused or a random number in the range 0 to dexterity + explevel - 1 is 25 or less,
    • then
      "The <harp> twangs."
    • Otherwise
      "The <harp> produces a lilting melody."
      All nymphs within a distances of 3 * explevel are awakened and made peaceful.
  • Exercises dexterity.
Drum of earthquake
  • If confused or has no charges, behaves as a leather drum.
  • "You produce a heavy, thunderous rolling!"
  • "The entire dungeon is shaking around you!"
  • Cause a force floor((explevel - 1) / 3) + 1 earthquake centred on you:
    On all points whose vertical and horizontal offsets are no more than twice the force from the epicentre:
    • monsters become hostile
    • there is a 1 in (14 - force) chance that a pit will open up on the spot (if that spot had a fountain, sink, altar, throne or was an ordinary room or corridor) or a door collapse. Other locations are unaffected (e.g., stairs remain there :)
  • All monsters within a distance of DungeonRows * DungeonCols are awakened. (this will be the whole level unless you are near a corner, I think).
Leather drum
  • "You beat a deafening row!"
  • All monsters within a distance of 40 * explevel are awakened.
  • Abuse wisdom.
