nethack spoiler site http://www.nethack.de/ Maintainer: Sascha Wostmann (sascha@nethack.de) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Subject: Eating (--Spoilers--) From: Sascha Date: Fri, 23 Sep 1996 1) Eating moster corpses for intrinsics In general, by eating a monster that has a special resistance or ability, it may confer it to your character. If the monster has more than one conferrable intrinsic, one is randomly picked. The chance of this selction is equally. The chance of the picked intrinsic being conferred is different for the different intrinsics. The possible intrinsics you can get this way are as follows: intrinsic prob.* message --------------------------------------------------------------------- Fire resistance lv/15 "You feel a momentary chill." or "You be chillin'." Sleep resistance lv/15 "You feel wide awake" Cold resistance lv/15 "You feel full of hot air" Disintegration... lv/15 "You feel very firm." or ...resistance "You feel totally together, man." Shock resistance lv/15 "Your health currently feels amplified!" or "You feel grounded in reality." Poison resistance lv/15** "You feel healthy." Teleport lv/10 "You feel very jumpy." or "You feel diffuse." Teleport control lv/12 "You feel in control of yourself." or "You feel centered in your personal space." Telepathy always "You feel a strange mental acuity." or "You feel in touch with the cosmos." (*) = lv is the level of the monster (**)= the probability of poison resistance conferred by a killer be or a scorpion is 1/4 2) special monsters df If you eat any of little dog, dog, large dog, kitten, housecat or large cat, you'll get the intrinsic 'aggravater monster'. c@ If you eat a cockatrice or Medusa's corpse and you are neither stoning resistant (ie. you are polymorphed in such a monster) nor you are polymorphed into a golem, you'll be instantly killed by stoning. l_ If you eat a lizard or any acidic monster, a possible stoning process is stopped. ("You feel limber" or "What a pity - you just ruined a future piece of (fine) art!" : Eating a lizard has the supplemental effect of removing confusion and stunning. The effect will only last one more turn. & Eating Death, Pestilence or Famine is instantly fatal. W Eating a Wraith's corpse lets you gain a level. @ Eating a were-creature makes you lycantrope of the same kind. @ Eating a nurse heals you up to max hitpoints. I When you eat a stalker's corpse and you are not invisible, you'll become invisible. If you're already invisible, you get the intrinsic 'see invisible'. B Eating any bats make you stunned for 30 (more) turns m Eating a mimic makes you mimic a pile of gold for some turns. The larger the mimic the longer you imitate. During you are shown as a $-sign, you may be attacked! Q A quantum mechanic's corpse makes you toggle your speed. That means if you are not currently fast, you'll get fast, if you are fast you lose the speed. : Eating a chameleon makes you polymorph h a mind flayer has a 50% chance of increasing your INT by one. Otherwise it confers telepathy. _F If the monster hat a stun or halucination attack or is a violet fungus, you get hallucination for (another) 200 turns. 3) Tins You try to open a tin up to 50 moves. If you don't succeed until then, you give up. There are 6 types of tins: pureed (500), deep fried (60), homemade (50), pickled (40), soup (20), and rotten (-50). The number in the parentheses is the nutrition value of each. Since you cannot tell in advance what type a given tin is, this isn't that useful to know. What you should know is that cursed tins always contain rotten food and therefor won't give any nutrition but make you even more hungry. Tins made by you with a tinning kit always are homemade or rotten. All other tins are one of these six possibilities. When you eat deep fried food, you get slippery fingers for up to 15 rounds making you drop your wielded weapon. Don't forget to pick it up again. One of the most useful tins is the tin of spinach. If the tin is not cursed, eating the spinach makes you feel like Popeye (or Swee'pea while hallucinating) and gives you more strength. Furthermore tins of spinach have a nutrition value of 600. 4) other food Eating a spring of wolfsbane cures lycanthropy. A carrot cures blindness, or have you ever seen a rabbit with glasses? Eating a fortune cookie gives you a rumor. You don't need to eat the fortune cookie, you can also just (r)ead it. Eating a lump of royal jelly increases your strength. If the jelly was cursed, you lose up to 20 hit points, otherwise you gain up to 20 HP and your wounded legs heal. When your actual HP went higher than max HP, there is a 1/17 chance of increasing the max HP by one. Eating a cockatrice egg is a real bad idea if you're not polymorphed into something that resists stoning. 5) Eating objects There are some conditions before you can eat an object. If you are polymorphed into a monster that eats metal (metallivorous) and the object is mettalic, you may eat it. If you are polymorphed into a gelatinous cube and the object is organic _and_ the object doesn't contain other objects, you may eat it. This is different for real g.cubes that can eat a container and hold the contents of that container engulfed. So when such a beasty eats your chest with all the artifacts, you may find them on its corpse. You can never eat unique items such as the Amulet, the Bell, etc. Eating something that isn't actually food, always remains only one move. The code says about it : "[we don't want] to deal with partly eaten plate mails, players who polymorph back to human in the middle of their metallic meal, etc...." Eating rings has a 1/3 chance of conferring the intrinsic of the ring. The conferrable intrinsics are: see invisible, invisibility, protection from shape changers, levitation (can destroy your game), adornment, gain strength, increase damage, protection, teleport, teleport control, polymorph and polymorph control. Eating amulets has a 1/5 chance of having an effect. The eatable amulets are: Change (changes your Sex), Strangulation (you choke), Restful sleep (you fall asleep). You can eat an amulet of life saving or reflection, but you won't get anything. As stated above, you can't eat the Amulet of Yendor. (Or do you want to sacrify yourself on the astral plane?) When you eat a leash with a monster on the other side, this monster gets unleashed. If you eat the iron ball or the chain while you are punished, the punishment is gone. If you eat the chain, you still have the ball available. When you try to eat something rustproof while being polymorphed into a rust monster, you spit it out non-rustproof and get stunned a few rounds. Eating a poisoned weapon has the same effect as eating poisonous corpses. You get poisoned if you're not resistant. 5a) I was given a compact description about eating rings and amulets, here it comes: From: wolfe@gfhansenlqs.com (Wolfe) Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Subject: Eating rings and amulets in NH 3.2.0. Date: Wed, 08 May 1996 21:06:22 GMT Eating Rings and Amulets in NH 3.2.0 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By Wolfe (Carlos Gonzalez Romano) wolfe@gfhansenlqs.com I consulted the Holy Writ, in the New Testament (ver 3.2.0), Book of eat.c, verse 1200. In my humble and imperfect interpretation (please correct me!): Chance of working: 1/3 for rings, 1/5 for amulets. Object Effect ----------------------------------------------------------------------- =RoResist Get the intrinsic ( resistance) =RoLevitation Makes you levitate (temporal, not permanent) (used to be permanent in NH3.1.3) =RoAdornment Increases Charisma by the enchantment of ring =RoStrength Increases Strenght by the enchantment of ring =RoIncreaseDamage Apparently (correct me) gives you intrinsic Increase Damage! (In NH313 used to boost strength only) =RoProtection Boosts your AC by enchantment of ring (Is not clear if you can do it more than once, but seems OK) "AoChange Changes your sex (same as wearing) "AoStrangulation You choke. (bad idea!) "AoRestfulSleep Puts you to sleep for 1-100 turns (bad idea) "AoReflection No effect. "AoLifeSaving No effect. Notes: o =RoHunger, Regeneration, Conflict, Stealth, AggravateMonster, Warning, Searching, ProtFromShapeChangers, Invisibility, SeeInvis and "AVersusPotion confer the intrinsic. o New in NH320: you can eat "AoESP, but it will only give telepathy as per floating eye corpse, not ESP as per "AoESP or [HoT. o New in NH320: you can eat "AoMB and get the intrinsic! (good!) 6) Food consumption (by B.Wayers' spoiler file "food") (I hope you don't mind me copying it...) A brief explanation on how food consumption works. Normal food consumption is one unit per turn. The following attributes increase your food consumption: Cause of food consumption Extra food consumption ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Regeneration (unless due to one unit per two turns an artifact) Being stressed or worse one unit per two turns Worn ring of hunger one unit per two turns Causing conflict (unless due to one unit per two turns an artifact) Any worn amulet one unit per twenty turns Carrying the Amulet of Yendor one unit per twenty turns Any worn charged ring (ie., not +0) one unit per twenty turns If you have regeneration (not caused by an artifact), you lose one food unit extra every odd turn. If you are stressed or worse, you lose another extra unit in this odd turn. In even turns, you lose a unit if you are wearing a ring of hunger, or otherwise have the "hunger" intrinsic. You also lose a unit in these turns if you cause conflict (again, not caused by an artifact). Also, in even turns, rings are checked. You lose one more unit every twenty turns for every charged ring you are wearing, one unit if you are wearing an amulet, and one unit if you are carrying the Amulet of Yendor. In theory if you were able to get intrinsic hunger, regeneration, and conflict, you were wearing an amulet and possesed the Amulet of Yendor, and you wore two charged rings (eg., +1 ring of protection, +2 ring of increase damage or whatever), and were stressed or worse, then you would get hungry at a rate of 64 units per 20 turns, which I believe is the maximum possible. In my calculations, this would account to (twenty turns) 20 (normal food consumption, every turn) + 10 (regeneration, odd turns) + 10 (stressed, odd turns) + 10 (hunger, even turns) + 10 (conflict, even turns) + 1 (left ring, turn 4) + 1 (right ring, turn 12) + 1 (amulet worn, turn 8) + 1 (the Amulet, carried, turn 16) ==== which makes a grand total of 64 units per twenty turns. 6b) Food consuption calculations by Bruce Cox Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.nethack Subject: Re: Eating (--Spoilers--) From: Bruce Cox Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 09:54:54 +1000 OK. Here is the deal with getting hungry. You know, of course, that hunger status is described by a number that gets smaller the hungrier you are. The way it gets smaller is covered in the function gethungry() in eat.c---this function is called every turn and the exact effect depends on what turn it is. Here is a pseudo-English description of that function which may be easier to understand than the C code (and hopefully just as correct...): GetHungry(turn) 1. If you are invulnerable (in the middle of praying), then you do not consume food. Exit. 2. If you are carnivorous or herbivorous and (you are awake or a 1 in 10 chance when asleep), consume one nutrition point. 3. If turn is odd: a. If you regenerate except as a result of a wielded artifact, consume one point. b. If you are worse than burdened, consume one point. 4. If turn is even: a. If you have the hunger attribute, consume one point. b. If you have the conflict attribute except as a result of an artifact, consume one point. c. If turn mod 20 is: 4 and you have a ring on your left hand which is not +0 or not chargeable, consume one point. 8 and you are wearing an amulet, consume one point. 12 and you have a ring on your right hand (as above), consume one point. 16 and you are carrying the Amulet of Yendor, consume one point. (if you don't know what a mod b is, it is the remainder after the divison of a by b). In particular, you will notice that no intrinsics cost nutrition points except for regeration, hunger and conflict, so if you get polymorph control by eating a ring, it will cost nothing.
